(A very brief) About Kasaï:
In the early 1900’s, Kasaï was a province of Belgian-occupied Congo (source), named for the Kasaï River—a major resource for the area. Following political divisions and colonial reorganization of the provinces (source), the modern (post 1963) Kasaï province is a much smaller area. “In 1960, the Democratic Republic of the Congo declared independence from Belgium. However, it was beset by a number of secessions and bitter civil war” (Taken from History of the Kasai region - Wikipedia).
With the 2015 repartitioning of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Kasaï became one of 21 current provinces (source).
Today, Kasaïan people live in many places, including the modern Kasaï province in south-central DRC. However, this is a mineral rich region – copper and diamonds have made this region a target for economic opportunities, colonial acculturation, and political greed, and interethnic tension (source).
In recent years, the violent struggle for control over natural resources has resulted in a massive displacement crisis for more than one million people. While some have returned, many have found nothing awaiting them; “optimism was limited by the fact that returnees often found their homes in ruins and faced little if any infrastructure to support their efforts to resume their livelihoods” (Taken from Kasaians of Luba origin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo - Minority Rights Group).
Currently, the paramount issue for Kasaïans remains massive displacement.
